Donation to the book collection of the Bible Society

On January 2012 Elmārs Zvaizgne who for many years has been the Chair of the Auditing Committee of the Latvian BS donated to the Bible Society proofs of the New Testament and Psalms published by the Latvian Ev. Lutheran Church in 1988. He was asked to serve as a proof-reader by the Archbishop Ēriks Mesters. These proof sheets are interesting also because of appendix that was not included in printed edition. In this appendix E. Zvaigzne mentioned texts that are not included in the NT edition of 1988 but have been found in previous editions that were based on Textus Receptus (Greek text of the New Testament which constituted the base for most of NT translations of Reformation-era). Nowadays Textus Receptus does not serve anymore as the basis for Bible translations that probably is the reason why appendix was not included in the Latvian edition.

Scriptures printed in the printing press named after the term borrowed from Marxist revolutionary terminology (“Struggle’) was a sign of times that pointed to changes in the society of that period. Paper for this edition was donated by the Church of Finland.

Bible and daily bread

Last December, just before Christmas, the Latvian Bible Society donated Bibles and other books to the non-profit Christian charity organization “Raven's Fund”. These books have been distributed thanks to supporters of the campaign “Bible Club 2011”. In this campaign participated 389 donors who donated in total 3358,- Ls (4797 EUR). 415 copies of various books have been given ted to the “Raven's Fund”: Bibles in Latvian and Russian, Gospel of Luke, books for children “Your Are Mine”, “Bible in the Short Stories”, “Make and Do Bible”.

The “Raven's Fund” regularly supplies food for socially marginalized families in Riga and around Latvia and support them spiritually and psychologically as well. There are 27 centers of “Raven's Fund” around Latvia where 1253 families receive support every week.

The Latvian Bible Society's General Secretary Valdis Tēraudkalns and Project Coordinator Antra Puriņa visited the Matthew Baptist church situated at the center of Riga. This church cooperates with the “Raven's Fund” in supplying food for the ones in those in need. About 50-60 people were gathering at the church to take part at the short worship service and to receive food afterwards. Those who wanted received also a copy of the Bible. Valdis Tēraudkalns made a little sermon and told about the campaign and our supporters who are mostly pensioners. They are people who understand how relevant the Bible is and they want share the Bible with others. This is an idea of the Bible Club around the world.

Thank you for our donors!

We will be very grateful for any donation! We will be waiting for your donations until 1 February, 2012 (for possibilities to donate see “Taking Part”).

Celebration of 20 years of the Estonian Bible Society

On 5th of November representatives of the Latvian Bible Society participated in celebration of 20 years since activities of the Bible Society were restarted in Estonia. All Baltic Bible Societies have been founded almost at the same time: in 1989 – in Latvia, in 1991- in Estonia, and in 1992 - in Lithuania. It would be more precise to say that the Bible Society work in these countries has been restarted because already in 19th century Bible Societies were present in this region. During all these years we have been in very good relationships with our Baltic colleagues. We are meeting each other once a year in our traditional workshop when we share our problems and successes. We cooperate in some publishing projects as well. Since 1994 General Secretary of the Estonian Bible Society has been Jaan Barenson – good colleague and host who always has received us very warmly in Estonia.

The Estonian Bible Society marked its jubilee with reception in the historical Tallinn Town Hall and with the Evening Prayer in the Holy Spirit Church.

New Bible translation in Russian

On June 1, 2011 the Bible Society in Russia released the new Bible translation which they had been preparing for 15 years. It can be considered the second Bible translation in Russian after so called synodal edition published in 1876. In the next day after launching half of the print-run was sold. Total print-run was 15 000 copies. In September was published revised edition of the new translation. This contemporary translation is based on the best copies of the original texts and utilizes recent discoveries in scholarly biblical research.

In the light of Divine Word

The Latvian Bible Society in June produced CDs with audio recording of Psalms, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes and Song of Songs. This project was accomplished thanks to our supporters. Until now we have produced 4 CDs with portions of biblical texts. Part of them always goes free of charge to organizations serving visually impaired people. We followed this tradition also this time and 100 copies reached listeners in all parts of Latvia.

Among those who received this recording was Riga Christ Lutheran Church. Its pastor Agris Sutra told us that once a month his parish has worship service in Strazdumuiža – institution for visually impaired people.

One of most active organizations for visually impaired people is in the city of Liepāja. Board Chair of Liepāja Society for Blind Māris Ceirulis told us, “such recordings are very needed, especially for blind people. While listening it is possible to think about the text, to compare it with what has been heard in worship services, to get to know God’s truth. It is convenient that recording is divided in files that makes it easy to find necessary chapter.”

Psalms and some other Old Testament poetry books in mp3 format

Part of recordings will be given free of charge to organizations and parishes working for visually impaired people: Library for Blind, Liepāja Society of Blind People, Group of Catholic Blind People, Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church in Riga as well as to individuals who are visually impaired.

News from Japan

Four members of staff from the Japan Bible Society set out yesterday (March 27) to take Bibles and relief goods by truck and van to Sendai, in North East Japan. The city is among the areas worst affected by the earthquake and tsunami.

In a letter thanking the UBS fellowship for their prayers and support, the Rev Wakoto Watabe, the Society’s General Secretary, said that, since the earthquake struck two weeks ago, roads and highways had begun to recover, allowing relief aid to get to the affected areas. “Information is still mixed,” he said, “and it is difficult to tell the actual number of victims and what is really needed – but we hope to receive reports from our staff soon.”

  The Bible Society is planning to work through large churches in the area. “We are trying to work out the cost of the project,” said Mr Watabe, “but analysing costs is difficult at the moment so what we can achieve will depend on the amount we can raise. We have also launched a fundraising campaign locally and hope to provide the following support:
- 5,000 picture Bibles and 5,000 manga Bibles for children and 10,000 Bibles for adults;
relief aid;
church recovery and rebuilding funds.

He reported that Tokyo was still experiencing aftershocks every day and the threat of nuclear radiation contamination was "very much a reality." He thanked the Fellowship for their prayers and generous support.

“The flood of emails received from our colleagues all over the world has been such an encouragement to us all,” he said.”I would appreciate your keeping us in your prayers.”

The first Bible Concordance in Latvian

The first Bible Concordance in Latvian was published in January. This is a very good tool now made available for Latvian Bible readers. The Concordance has been very long project (from 1998) because of the limited financial resources we had. It is done in very close cooperation with the team of the computer linguistics of the British and Foreign Bible Society. We are especially thankful to the Norwegian Bible Society for supporting publication of this work!

The Concordance has been donated to theological students of various institutions and to various churches: Luther’s Academy, Baltic Pastoral Institute, Roman Catholic Seminar of Riga, Faculty of Theology of University of Latvia, the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Latvia, Pentecostal Union of Latvia and the Latvian United Methodist Church.

Latvian Bible

Humans wither like grass, and their glory fades like wild flowers. Grass dries up, and flowers fall to the ground. But what the Lord has said will stand forever.
(1 Pet. 1.24)
