What is Latvian Bible Society?
The Latvian Bible Society is interconfessional organization, which translates, publishes and distributes the Bible and other Bible related literature in Latvia. It works also with holistic projects in accordance with its vision to be in dialogue with wider society.

Our goals
- to translate Bible in language which can be easily understood and is faithful to the original texts;
– to distribute Bible without doctrinal notes or comments;
– to distribute Bible at a price which is acceptable to the purchaser and in format people will appreciate.

To respond to contemporary challenges we all face means helping people to interact with the Bible in various ways and to work in wider context in partnership with various governmental and nongovernmental organizations.

Our activities
We publish
the Bible in various formats and for diverse needs readers have. It includes not only printed versions but also the Scriptures in electronic, audio and video formats, also editions for people with special needs. In order to assist readers on their way to better understanding of the Scripture we publish also books of interconfessional character for children as adults.

Translate – work with the new interconfessional Bible translation in Latvian is going through its final stage. All books of the Bible have been translated, now text is going through editorial process.

Raise funds – we organize regular fundraising campaigns: My Advent Gift, Bible Club, Help to Live!, Bible Day. Raised funds are mainly used to publish and to donate books to various, often marginalized groups of inhabitants of Latvia.

Donate - Bibles and other books to schools, kindergartens, orphanages, libraries, parishes, prisons, elderly homes, support centers for people affected by AIDS/HIV. Every year part of raised funds is forwarded also to the particular social needs of one institution chosen for that particular year. In 2004 we donated more then 7265 books.

Organize -Bible day events, conferences, contests, concerts etc.

cooperate – with other governmental and nongovernmental organizations in educational, interconfessional and human rights projects (promoting religious tolerance).

History of the Latvian Bible Society
In 1813 with assistance of the British and Foreign Bible Society as parts of the Russian Bible Society were formed the Courland Bible Society and the Riga Bible Society. In period between World Wars in Latvia worked several offices of foreign Bible Societies. During the years of the Soviet occupation this work was disrupted and was renewed only in 1989, shortly before the collapse of USSR. In its work are taking part people from all traditional Christian denominations.

The Latvian Bible Society is full member of the United Bible Societies (UBS). The UBS was founded in 1946 in order to cooperate in an international level. It is a world fellowship of Bible Societies, united for consultation, mutual support and action in their common task of achieving the widest possible effective distribution of the Holy Scripture. Now the UBS has grown into family of more than 120 Bible Societies all over the world. Their ministry is witness of practical ecumenism.

Latvian Bible

Humans wither like grass, and their glory fades like wild flowers. Grass dries up, and flowers fall to the ground. But what the Lord has said will stand forever.
(1 Pet. 1.24)
