Projects in 2010

Bibles and children books – for families suffering from economic recession

Goal – donate Bibles and books for children distributed together with supplies of basic food for poor families with children provided by our social partner - non-profit Christian charity organization “Raven's Fund” that supports people in need with food.

Supporters - 108

Total amount of donations 1809, 50 Ls (2584 EUR)

Result – 348 Bibles and other books have been donated to the “Raven's Fund”. It has 30 centres around Latvia – 18 outside Riga, 12 in the capital of Latvia - Riga. Before distribution of food usually is organized short worship service.

Producing CD with Psalms and other poetical texts of the Bible

Goal – to produce CD with Psalms and other poetical texts of Bible and to distribute part of CD sets to people with sight disabilities.

Supporters - 406

Total amount of donations 4360 Ls (6228 EUR)

Result – CD with Psalms and other poetical texts of Bible will be published in the first part of year 2011 and will be donated free of charge to the Library for Blind People of Latvia, The Society of Blind People of Latvia and other organizations (including churches) that are serving persons with sight disabilities.

New Testament in new translation for libraries all over Latvia

Goal – to donate the New Testament in new translation to public libraries in Latvia.

Total amount of donations 2114,50 (3020 EUR)

Result – 180 copies of the New Testament in new translation have been donated to public libraries in Latvia.

Bible message for children in Latvia and Georgia

Goal – to implement the second part of the Bible learning program "Bible Adventure" in schools around Latvia. 10% of the campaign income will be sent to the Georgian Bible Society for distribution of children Bibles among children of families displaced during the August 2008 Russian-Georgian war.

Total amount of donations 12 560,50 Ls (17 330 EUR)

Result – two teachers will go to Sweden for the training course on the second part of the Bible learning program "Bible Adventure". Then we will organize seminars for teachers in Latvia. 870,- Ls (1237.90 EUR) have been sent to the Georgian Bible Society.

Scriptures for people after detention

Goal – production of the CD with more poetical Bible texts accompanied with bird songs and music.

Result – 142 Bibles and other books in Latvian and Russian will be donated to the evangelical church "Blue Cross" in the Christmas time. Bibles and other books are used by the church for its ministry to former prisoners, homeless and other socially marginalized groups.

Producing CD “In The Shadow of Your Wings”

Goal – providing people who just left prison with Bibles

Result – CD "In The Shadow of Your Wings" has been produced in April, 2010. The text was recorded by two popular Latvian actors Kārlis Auškāps and Āris Rozentāls. Composer and sound director was Ungars Savickis. Our price is 6 Ls (8,5 EUR), for donors – 5 Ls (7,1 EUR).

Old Testament for people with sight disabilities in mp3 format (project started in 2008)

Goal – recording the Old Testament in mp3 format. Part of produced recordings will be free of charge delivered to the Library for Blind People of Latvia, The Society of Blind People of Latvia and other organizations (including churches) that are serving persons with sight disabilities.

Donation 5527.72 Ls (7896.7 Eur)

Result – Genesis and Exodus in mp3 format has been produced in April, 2010. The text was recorded by two young and popular Latvian actors Dita Lūriņa un Kaspars Znotiņš. This is the first CD of digital Old Testament recording in Latvian. 85 copies of that CD free of charge have delivered to the Library for Blind People of Latvia, The Society of Blind People of Latvia and other organizations (including churches) that are serving persons with sight disabilities and individuals as well. We hope to continue carrying on the project Audiobible (containing the whole Bible in audio format) in the future.

Gospel for young people in journal-type format

Goal – publish one of the gospels prepared particularly for young people in journal-type format and to distribute it not only in bookshops but also through other channels more appropriate to young audiances. 10% from donations will be handed over for family of Evita Raituma Zālīte (guardian of 5 children - 3 boys and 2 girls).

Result – 954,- Ls were handed over to family of Evita Raituma Zālīte in February, 2010. She have taken five children under her guardianship - 3 brothers and 2 sisters: Kaspars (8), Daniels (7), Sintija (6), Jānis (5), Elizabete (2). The Gospel of Luke for youth in journal format will be published at the end of year 2010.

The new Bible translation

Goal – to carry on work for the new Bible translation in situation of economic recession.

Donors - 152

Donation 1782.57 Ls (2546.5 Eur)

Result – Typesetting has been done for all of the Old Testament books and the Deuterocanonicals. In April the first literary editing of layout has been done until the book of Jeremiah. Editor still needs to finish reading the rest of biblical books. Then the second (last) editing will follow. The Bible in the new translation is planed for printing in year 2011

Awareness raising training for teachers "Themes of religious diversity in education - European, national and regional dimension"

Result – in 29th and 30th of October 2009 in Rezekne took place academic conference for teachers "Themes of religious diversity in education - European, national and regional dimension". Papers were read by experts from universities of Latvia and Daugavpils as well as from Rezekne Higher Education Institution and Graduate School of Social Work and Social Pedagogics „Attīstība.” Conference was organized by the Latvian Bible Society in cooperation with the Faculty of Theology (University of Latvia), Department of History and Philosophy and Lettonica Institute (Rezekne Higher Education Institution). During the symposium participants had an opportunity to receive a copy of proceedings of the conference. This project was supported by PROGRESS, the EU's employment and social solidarity programme (2007-2013).

Scripture resources in Russian for religious education in public schools

Goal – providing teachers working in Russian schools with materials for classes on religious instruction.

Result – 132 copies of sets of materials in Russian (Bible, Bible Encyclopedia, Bible maps, CD “Traveling in the Bible”, booklet about history of the Russian Bible) were distributed free of charge to teachers in Latvia.
